Cargo bikes are a way of life in countries like Africa. Used to transport all types of goods from point A to point B, these bikes are essential to the economy and to consumers everywhere.
The Bamboo Bike Project is an effort to determine if these cargo bikes can be made from bamboo and become a sustainable form of transportation. With the lack of bike shops, repair shops and parts retailers in Africa, making the frames from bamboo, which can be locally grown, will provide many folks with the opportunity to have a bicycle.
The Bamboo Bike Project is a joint effort by David Ho and John Mutter of The Earth Institute at Columbia University, and Craig Calfee of Calfee Design.
