Monday, August 20th, 2007

We all know that the environment is in dire need. We’ve all heard the claims, the stories, the movies and read the books. Lots and I mean lots of people are still asking, what can I do?

Blog Action Day is a site that has the countdown ready for bloggers to all join in on one day and post about the environment in your own way and on your own terms. Lots of a-listers and big names have signed up, so tune in and see what impact this can have.

Super Six, gift of green

Tuesday, July 17th, 2007

Stage five winner Filippo Pozzato, was presented with a special “Feel the Green” Super Six bicycle from Cannondale on Monday.

The bicycle is made by Cannondale in a facility in Pennsylvania, where the company has made huge investments in areas of material management and disposal.

Pozzato will race the bike during the Tour and then it’s off to auction for charity. The funds raised by the charity acution will benefit a bicycle advocacy group.

The Bamboo Bike Project

Friday, July 6th, 2007

Cargo bikes are a way of life in countries like Africa. Used to transport all types of goods from point A to point B, these bikes are essential to the economy and to consumers everywhere.

The Bamboo Bike Project is an effort to determine if these cargo bikes can be made from bamboo and become a sustainable form of transportation. With the lack of bike shops, repair shops and parts retailers in Africa, making the frames from bamboo, which can be locally grown, will provide many folks with the opportunity to have a bicycle.

The Bamboo Bike Project is a joint effort by David Ho and John Mutter of The Earth Institute at Columbia University, and Craig Calfee of Calfee Design.

Hybrid hurdles

Thursday, July 5th, 2007

One of my favorite sites, Daily Fuel Economy Tip, has a great article on What Stops People from Buying Hybrids. A few of the issues are listed below:

  • 49% of respondents stated that hybrid cars are too expensive
  • 29% of respondents stated that they were waiting for plug-in hybrid vehicles
  • 11% of respondents stated that they just are not interested in buying a hybrid vehicle

Seems lots of people are aware of hybrids, but it’s still price that slowing the movement.
